Goodreads Rating: 4/5 Stars
How I acquired it: I received an ebook copy of this book from the author via Xpresso Book Tours in exchange for an honest review. This in no way influenced my opinions below.
The Uprising Series tells the story of three freedom fighters and their friends in high — and low — places that come together to overthrow a vainglorious Emperor and his militaristic Cabal to restore the city, and the way of life, they once knew and loved.
In The Gathering, Jamie Ryan has defected from the Cabal and has joined his former brothers-in-arms — Basile Perrinault and Kanoa Shinomura — to form a collective known as The Uprising. When an explosion leads to him crossing paths with Evanora Cunningham — a product of Jamie’s past — he discovers that The Uprising is bigger, and more important, than he thought.

It took me a little bit to get into this book because we are thrown right in. Head first. We learn the back-story as the book progresses but there isn’t a part at the beginning that explains what’s going on. That being said as soon as I got about 2 chapters in I couldn’t put the book down. Bernadette Giacomazzo took the story that’s currently happening in our world and gave it steroids. It’s scary how accurate this book is to what’s happening right now but she uses different analogies and different examples.
This story is about an Emperor who has taken over New York and has decided to make everyone follow him. He has destroyed music, the arts, free will, etc. If you break the rules or upset the Emperor the Cabal (military) force you to partake in “psi” which basically turns you into a zombie. This has been happening for 20 years and the Uprising has had enough. They are working to over throw the Emperor and bring back the old New York. Jamie and his band of brothers (who were once a part of the Cabal) are leading this Uprising and they’ll do anything to take the Emperor down.
All right, let me start off by saying I’m not 100% sure there was supposed to be a romantic aspect to this book. However, there is a scene (sorry this is a little spoiler) where Evanora is in Jamie’s bed (practically naked) and she wakes up in the morning lying on top of him and getting excited thinking about being with him. While nothing happens, I can’t say something won’t in future books. Let’s say Evanora is 21 (roughly) and Jamie is her mother/father’s age, say 45(ish). Now I’m all for a younger woman/older man relationship but this guy is her father’s best friend. To me it doesn’t make sense and it’s a little sleazy. I guess we’ll just have to wait till the next book to see what happens.
I believe this book really sets the scene for the rest of this series. There is a lot of information and almost none of the plot holes/conflicts are resolved at the end, which is a good thing for the author. However, frustrating for the reader. I want to know more. I want to know what happens and now the author has me looking forward to the next book. I can’t wait to see how Evanora and Jamie’s lives continue and what happens to New York.
